Donations to veterans memorial doubled today
Howell dentist Dr. Thomas Kellogg is hosting a special match-day event today — Flag Day — to raise funds for the enhancement of the Livingston County Veterans Monument.
Kellogg will match all donations to the project made at the event up to a total of $10,000. The match is made possible through the June & Edward Kellogg Dental Foundation.
For donations to be matched, they must be dropped off today at Kellogg’s office at 1250 Byron Road, between Grand River Avenue and M-59 in Howell. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. Checks should be made out to the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
Built in the 1940s, the Livingston County Veterans Memorial lists the names of veterans from Livingston County who gave their lives in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Located on the lawn of the historic Livingston County Courthouse on Grand River Avenue in Howell, the memorial is also the site of ceremonies held on Memorial Day, Flag Day and Veterans Day.
Plans are in place to enlarge the memorial area and add seating, lighting and landscaping to create a more visible, easily accessible tribute to veterans. The cost of the project is approximately $40,000, and the goal is to have it installed by the end of summer.
All donations of more than $1,000 will be recognized at the memorial.
Engraved 4-inch-by-8-inch paving stones to be installed in the Ring of Honor are being sold for $100 each.
Any bricks purchased at Kellogg’s Flag Day event will be included in the match.
